DIY: Sweet Raspberry Organic Soy Candles
I have always been obsessed with scented candles. So, instead of buying an expensive jar over and over and over again, I've decided to finally create one for myself. Soy candles has no toxins, carcinogens or pollutants as compared to regular candles. Since Soy candles are also non-toxic, they won't release toxins into the air as they burn.
Here's the materials that I used:
1. Soy Wax Flakes
2. Small Tin Cans
3. Candle Wicks
4. Metal Tabs
5. Sweet Raspberry Fragrance Oil
Boiling Water and Metal Pail (for double boiler)
Step 1. Using a glue gun, secure the candle wick with a metal tab
Step 2. Melt the Soy flakes in a double boiler using a pot of boiling water and metal pail.
Step 3. Let the melted wax settle down a bit before adding the scent. (Too much heat may cause the oil to lose its fragrance!)
Step 4. Pour the melted wax on the tin cans and use sticks to secure the wick in the middle of the can.
Step 5. Wait for the wax to completely harden.
Benefits of using Soy wax to make candles instead of regular paraffin wax from Pure Integrity:
Soy wax is derived from a vegetables, (soy beans), while it's counter partner, paraffin wax is derived from petroleum (a refined a gasoline product).
Soy wax is a natural, renewable resource.
Soy wax is biodegradable and cleans up with plain old soap and water.
Soy wax has a lower melting point than paraffin wax and because of this, soy candles will burn slower or longer than paraffin candles.
I am so proud of my first candle, it smells so good and lasts longer than my previous candles, not to mention it is good for the environment as well. My friend told me this could be a potential business someday - what do you think? :)
