5 Key Benefits of Living Hygge

My obsession with coziness, breakfast, tea in the morning, scented candles, and christmas lights is apparently a common Scandinavian way of life, or Hygge. Hygge living brought so much goodness in my life that I've decided to dedicate my blog on it.

Pronounced as Hue-guh, I encountered the word in a Blinkist Free Daily Book, The Little Book of Hygge by Meik Wiking. The term is often mentioned in the same paragraph that reminds us that Danes are the happiest people in the world, despite the cold weather and high taxes.

In this blog, I will write the 5 key benefits of living hygge away from the Nordic countries.

1. Good Mood

Hygge is the intimacy you create, several times a day, on purpose in order to make life bearable or even very good." What does that mean? Taking time to slow down and make little moments in your day — sharing a coffee or cake with a friend, curling up with a good book, playing games with your family, riding the bike in the fresh air to get a dose of nature.

2. Alertness

Mornings are generally quiet compared to any other time of the day—it’s the time before meetings, classes, responsibilities, and emails. Living hygge is starting the day with a good cup of coffee or tea and breakfast in a cozy atmosphere. It’s helpful to consciously decide to have a daily caffeine kick and full stomach in the morning to stay alert all day.

3. Less Worries, More Focus

Living Hygge is living life one moment at a time. It can be easy for us to get caught up in the externally driven world. The reality is that living one moment at a time opens up an entirely new dimension of living.

4. Time Management

There’s the Nordic insistence on knowing how to do practical things and doing them well, on taking care of your body with time outdoors every day. Living hygge means being efficient and effective in order to live a good life.

There's another nordic word that is often associated with hygge - "lagom," which generally means doing things in moderation. The word itself is now being used in everyday settings to mean “average” or “just right.”

5. Attention to Well-being

Living Hygge is paying attention to your personal well-being, by taking time each day to perform rituals of self-love, comfort living, and inner peace. Louisa Thomsen Brits, a British-Danish writer, casts hygge as a state of mindfulness: how to make essential and mundane tasks dignified, joyful, and beautiful, how to live a life connected with loved ones.

Hygge is not just about the candles and coffee in the morning. Living Hygge is having a sense of humor, being kind to yourself and not taking life too seriously. :)
