5 Savvy Ways to Control Weight
Gaining weight as we age is inevitable - our metabolism slows down and our lifestyle shifts from play to work. As a result, we become prone to health risks and body-image insecurities.
Being underweight has always been my problem, so it was very surprising when I noticed the sudden changes in my body. When I started to see muffin tops and flabby arms - I knew I had to do something.
In this blog, I will share some of the savvy ways I do to control my weight. How I adjusted with my slowed down metabolism. I will share how I was able to cope with the adult lifestyle without magic pills, rigorous exercise, or strict diet.
1. Walk to Work, from Work
Exercise requires time, energy, and commitmment. Realistically speaking, I'm too lazy to bring myself to the gym every week. But, I can walk to - and from work, adding in regular exercise on my daily routine.
In addition to the physical benefits, walking daily is better for my well-being, according to research conducted by health economists at the University of East Anglia (UEA) and the Center for Diet and Activity Research (CEDAR).
2. Green Tea
I replaced my regular sugar-packed 3 in 1 coffee drink with Green Tea. Drinking three to five cups of green tea a day helps your body to burn an extra 70 calories a day. It also works even when the green tea is cold, due to its active ingredient like catechins and caffeine which boosts metabolism.
Refrigerated green tea with honey tastes like heaven!
3. Boiled Eggs for Break Time
Eggs are among the healthiest foods. Each large egg comes with six grams of protein, as well as all nine essential amino acids. Boiled eggs makes me feel full, an amazing breakfast and snack on the go. Its low calorie content is ideal for people who are calculating daily calorie intake.
Boiled eggs are usually available at 7eleven branches or any Sari-sari store.
4. Lemon-Infused Water
Lemon is good for stomach health. It allows the body to consume more nutrients. Lemon makes me look less bloated and helps in flushing out toxins inside my body. I never tried those slimming tea because I regularly drink lemon water.
Additionally, just the scent of a lemon has been found to reduce stress levels and improve moods.
5. No Rice Diet
In the Philippines, we are conditioned to eat rice EVERY. SINGLE. MEAL. When I reached the mark of 2lbs closer to being overweight, I started to do the No-rice Diet. I eat as many ulam (viand) as I can but without rice. It took me a matter of 2 weeks to shed off the extra pounds. Amazing.
To sum it up, weight gain due to aging is unstopablle, but manageable. No time for exercise? Walk your way to the office. Need your daily energy booster? Drink Green Tea. Always hungry? Eat some eggs. Digestive problems? Drink lemon water. Want to drastically reduce weight? Find the perfect diet that you can live with! :)
